Attempted Murder Parolee Nabbed After Robbery, U-Haul Chase In Region, Police Say

Emergency crews in Rensselaer County were initially called at around 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 17, with reports of a violent domestic incident at a home in Lansingburgh, according to Troy Police.

The victim told dispatchers that a man had robbed them while displaying a handgun at their home where a child was present.

As officers were heading to the scene, they were told the suspect had fled in a U-Haul box truck. He was later spotted in Troy near Jay Street and 6th Avenue, but took off when officers initiated a traffic stop, police said.

Because of the violent nature of the alleged robbery, police said they continued pursuing the suspect as he drove westbound on Route 7 and then southbound on I-87.

He eventually crashed the box truck and ran into a wooded area, where he was arrested after a brief struggle, according to police.

Police identified the man as 39-year-old Murat Gibson, of Troy. Officers reportedly found him with a loaded, illegal handgun that had been tucked into his waistband.

Gibson suffered minor injuries during the incident, but refused medical treatment after being evaluated by the Troy Fire Department. There were no other reports of injuries.

He was expected to be arraigned Wednesday, Jan. 18, in Troy City Court.

According to state records, Gibson was sentenced to more than 14 years in prison in 2007 after being convicted of second-degree attempted murder and attempting to promote prison contraband. He was on supervised parole at the time of Tuesday’s arrest.

He is facing the following new charges:

• Robbery in the First Degree (Felony)
• Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree (Felony)
• Obstructing Governmental Administration (Misdemeanor)
• Reckless Driving (Misdemeanor)
• Menacing in the Second Degree (Misdemeanor)
• Fleeing a Police Officer in a Motor Vehicle (Misdemeanor)
• Resisting Arrest (Misdemeanor)
• Endangering the Welfare of a Child (Misdemeanor)
• Criminal Use of a Firearm (Felony)
• Burglary in the First Degree (Felony)

Multiple agencies responded to the incident, including the Colonie Police Department and New York State Police.
